Composting is a practice that is thousands of years old and it is hard to pinpoint when the first tumblers were utilized. Back in the 1970’s, there were some innovative gardeners that offered “compost rollers,” plans for barrels and a variety of other schemes for holding and turning compost.
For decades, commercial tumblers have been used and the choices available have flourished over the past couple of years. Compost tumblers are easy to use – all you have to do is load them up with brown and green waste you removed from your kitchen and yard. When it’s full, let it sit there and heat up.
Why Do You Need to Turn Compost?
Turning a compost pile is a great idea as you will be mixing the organic materials in with the organisms it contains. Tuning also aerates the compost, greatly speeding up the composting process. Sure, there’s always the popular method that involves using the pitchfork, but why would you put yourself through all of that work when there’s something available to make the entire process a whole lot easier?
When you use a tumbler, the organic materials will be infused with fresh oxygen, to keep it cooking. While you could always build your own outdoor tumbling composter bin, you could just go out and buy one that is already put together. While doing a bit of research, we discovered the Yimby Tumbler Composter.
We could always just tell you to go out there and buy it right away, but we don’t think that would be fair. Before you buy something, you should learn about it in order to make sure it is a suitable fit for you.

Details of the Yimby Compost Tumbler
Long story short, this composter lends a helping hand to gardeners who want to make their soil healthy. In return, this soil helps plants to grow, and provides healthy food for your family. In addition to all of this, it helps the environment as it continuously reuses organic waste, which is better than hauling it away where it will be dumped in a landfill.
The Yimby Tumbler Composter processes organic waste and the only thing you will have to do is turn the tumbler 5-6 times every few days. This process is much easier than going out in the yard and using a pitchfork to toss compost around.
The modern look keeps it from being an eye sore in your yard. Neighbors will definitely appreciate this. It is designed with an octagon-looking shape with a total of 8 side panels and the rich black color is a major plus. If you’re familiar with barrel composters, when you first see this, you’ll realize the similarities. However, this one is raised up from the ground in a vertical position. We believe the best visual feature of this tumbler would be the plastic panels that are super smooth – this is something you’ll just have to touch to see what we’re talking about.
As you make organic waste, just add it to one of the chambers of the tumbler. The compost will sit there and heat up inside the chamber where it will be broken down. While looking at other reviews on this product, we found some people talking about adding a compost accelerator in order to speed up the process, which is also a good idea. Depending on the materials and technique you use, compost can be ready to go in as little as 2 weeks.
In order to make sure the ball gets rolling as quickly as possible, it is important that you keep the compost at the right temperature range. As a general rule of the thumb, you need to keep the compost above 55 degrees F. If you were to go below this temperature, making compost will be a slow process. At the same time, you want to make sure the tumbler doesn’t get too hot, so make sure you do not leave it in direct sun. If you leave it in the sun, the panels are going to heat up and this will do more harm than good. You don’t want to burn your compost, do you? We recommend using a thermometer in order to keep a check on the temperature of the compost. If it gets too hot, move it away from the sun so that you do not burn it.
The Yimby Compost Tumbler has 2 air vents on the sides, allowing for proper air circulation. In addition to this, there are mid-panel couples so that the clumps of compost get broke up. In order to avoid odor, many recommend going for a 25:1 carbon ratio. No worries, achieving this with the tumbler is easy. All you have to do is add carbon-rich materials or dried leaves along with your kitchen waste …it really isn’t that hard to use.
37 Gallons of Compost Every 2 Weeks
This composter will allow you to produce up to a total of 37 gallons of compost every 2 weeks. So in one month, you can easily get 74 gallons of compost. This is a best case scenario timeline and to speed up the decomposition process, you can cut the waste materials up into tiny pieces. Smaller pieces equals faster break down in the composter. With the right materials and weather conditions, fast compost is definitely possible with the Yimby.
Dual Chamber Design
This dual chamber design makes it so that you can place organic materials in one chamber and in the other chamber, cook existing compost. This way, you will be able to continuously generate compost.
Build Quality and Materials
The legs are made of sturdy steel, while the tumbler itself is made of recycled plastic. We really like how the plastic panels are UV inhibited so the sun doesn’t fade them and BPA free. With the UV resistance, we are able to place the compost bin in direct exposure to the sun for an entire day. Mind you, we do not recommend posting the tumbler in direct sun, unless the temperatures in your area are low. Either way, with the UV resistance, you can leave the tumbler in the sun all day without having to worry about deformation or melting.
As for the galvanized steel frame, it is 100% corrosion resistant, so you can leave it out in the weather without having to worry about it. While the stand is stable, but there are times where it was blown over by a strong gust of wind or we could see it being flipped over by dogs and other animals. For this reason, we recommend placing it in a secure area outside.
Putting the Yimby together can be a tad bit complicated, and this is something you need to prepare yourself for. You may want to have a friend or family member help you assemble it if you’re not the type of person that likes putting things together. When we opened up the box and started pulling everything out, we found a lot of screws that we needed to install, but if you’re skilled enough, this entire process should be done within an hour. If you struggle though, you could find yourself sitting there three hours later. In total, there are 56 screws, so before you buy this product, make sure you charge that battery powered drill.
