Functionality

Temperature
In order to make sure the ball gets rolling as quickly as possible, it is important that you keep the compost at the right temperature range. As a general rule of the thumb, you need to keep the compost above 55 degrees F. If you were to go below this temperature, making compost will be a slow process. At the same time, you want to make sure the tumbler doesn’t get too hot, so make sure you do not leave it in direct sun. If you leave it in the sun, the panels are going to heat up and this will do more harm than good. You don’t want to burn your compost, do you? We recommend using a thermometer in order to keep a check on the temperature of the compost. If it gets too hot, move it away from the sun so that you do not burn it.
Air Circulation
The Yimby Compost Tumbler has 2 air vents on the sides, allowing for proper air circulation. In addition to this, there are mid-panel couples so that the clumps of compost get broke up. In order to avoid odor, many recommend going for a 25:1 carbon ratio. No worries, achieving this with the tumbler is easy. All you have to do is add carbon-rich materials or dried leaves along with your kitchen waste …it really isn’t that hard to use.

This composter will allow you to produce up to a total of 37 gallons of compost every 2 weeks. So in one month, you can easily get 74 gallons of compost. This is a best case scenario timeline and to speed up the decomposition process, you can cut the waste materials up into tiny pieces. Smaller pieces equals faster break down in the composter. With the right materials and weather conditions, fast compost is definitely possible with the Yimby.
Dual Chamber Design
This dual chamber design makes it so that you can place organic materials in one chamber and in the other chamber, cook existing compost. This way, you will be able to continuously generate compost.
Build Quality and Materials
The legs are made of sturdy steel, while the tumbler itself is made of recycled plastic. We really like how the plastic panels are UV inhibited so the sun doesn’t fade them and BPA free. With the UV resistance, we are able to place the compost bin in direct exposure to the sun for an entire day. Mind you, we do not recommend posting the tumbler in direct sun, unless the temperatures in your area are low. Either way, with the UV resistance, you can leave the tumbler in the sun all day without having to worry about deformation or melting.
As for the galvanized steel frame, it is 100% corrosion resistant, so you can leave it out in the weather without having to worry about it. While the stand is stable, but there are times where it was blown over by a strong gust of wind or we could see it being flipped over by dogs and other animals. For this reason, we recommend placing it in a secure area outside.
Assembly
Putting the Yimby together can be a tad bit complicated, and this is something you need to prepare yourself for. You may want to have a friend or family member help you assemble it if you’re not the type of person that likes putting things together. When we opened up the box and started pulling everything out, we found a lot of screws that we needed to install, but if you’re skilled enough, this entire process should be done within an hour. If you struggle though, you could find yourself sitting there three hours later. In total, there are 56 screws, so before you buy this product, make sure you charge that battery powered drill.
