For those who have built a homemade compost bin or pile in the past, the Algreen Soil Saver Compost bin will look very familiar. This compost bin functions in much the same way as traditional compost piles, but with some added features to make the process easier. You just put your yard trimmings, leaves, or kitchen scraps into the opening in the top and in a few months you can expect to have nutrient rich soil for your garden, containers, or flower beds. This composter is much more visually appealing than many homemade bins, or giant open piles, which might be a good choice for areas with close neighbors.
The Soil Saver has a few features that set it apart from the typical stationary compost bin. The lid has holes to allow for rainwater to run through and keep your pile from drying out. The lid also locks in place to prevent animals such as squirrels and raccoons from getting into the compost. The top opening is very large and allows easy access to add more waste materials or to stir the pile. At the bottom of the bin there are two large sized sliding doors that allow for compost to be collected easily. The sliding door feature is the most useful if you plan on having a cold compost pile, which just means you throw everything in the composter and wait for it to break down without any other work. The bottom of the bin is completely open and this is great for drainage, as well as to allow earthworms into the compost pile to help break down material(A feature you don’t get with the compost tumblers).The plastic used in construction of the Soil Saver is thick, rugged, and made from 100% recycled materials. While the features of the Algreen Soil Saver Compost Bin increase the ease of use, it doesn’t come without some issues. The area where the composter is placed must be completely level or the bin will not be square, and this causes the lid to not lock into place properly. This will require a little more work during set up, but if the area is leveled first, the lid works fine. Also, since this is a stationary bin, if you want to have finished compost faster, you will need to stir the pile every once in awhile to keep it cooking. You’ll have to put some effort in to do this, especially as the composter fills up. The spinning compost tumblers make this task easier, but come with a higher price tag.
Turning the compost is not required, but as mentioned before, it greatly speeds up the composting process.
