Assembly

The Greenes Tiered Raised garden bed is easy to assemble due to the dovetailed design of the cedar panels. Everything slides together without the need for tools, except for the caps on the 6 posts that require screws or nails. The tiered design is a plus for those with smaller yards due to it’s vertical growing layout.

Is It Functional For Planting?

The different depths of the three raised bed levels, are ideal for planting a wide variety of vegetables or herbs together. The top level (21 inch depth) is great for tall or vine plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers, and a trellis can even be added to the back of the garden bed. The middle level (14 inch depth) is deep enough to plant root crops such as carrots, radishes, and onions. The lowest tier (7 inch depth), is perfect for herbs and ornamental flowers.

Keep This In Mind

The cedar boards are a bit thin, and lacking quality at times. Reviewers noted that some boards have slight cracks and can be very rough cut. This detracts somewhat from the visual appearance, but doesn’t affect the overall functionality. Soil still stays contained inside of bed’s tiers.

This Greenes raised garden bed takes a lot of soil to fill, especially the upper tiers. It takes approximately 20-25 cubic feet (about 20 bags ) to completely fill, so be prepared for a fair amount of work to get it ready before planting. The bottom of the tiers are completely open, so it might not be suitable for some decks or patios depending on what you’re looking for.

The Good

  • Easy to assemble
  • Tiered design with different depths allows for lots of plant variety choices
  • Works well in small spaces
  • Looks great

The Bad

  • Boards are thin and some may be rough cut
  • Requires lots of soil to fill
  • The separate tiers have no bottom (bottom of bed is completely open)

Bottom Line

The Greenes Tiered Raised Garden Bed is a great option for those with limited space looking for a functional bed that makes the most of that space. It’s not the best quality material used in construction and may not last forever, but it’s an overall good value to start a small backyard garden.
