The Lifetime 60058 Compost Tumbler has one of the highest capacity bins on the market. The almost 11 cubic foot capacity should be enough to handle even a large family’s kitchen scraps and yard waste. It is well constructed, and the double walled polyethylene absorbs and holds in heat and moisture for better “cooking” of the compost. The galvanized steels base feels solid, and easily supports the tumbler bin, even when completely full.

The tumbler’s lid is very large, and completely removable, which is a nice added feature that helps when adding large amounts of material. The rotation locking pin allows you to lock the the composter in place in the horizontal position. While locked, this makes it easy to shovel out finished compost into a wheelbarrow or cart.

Use the locking pins to lock the composter in place horizontally while you unload compost.

The internal mixing bar functions well, and makes sure that every time you turn the tumbler, the compost gets the proper amount of aeration. Compost cooking time isn’t an exact science, and depends on many factors (such as materials used, and temps.), but with it’s many features and solid construction the Lifetime 60058 is very quick and efficient at producing high quality compost.

Large lid makes it easy to add large piles to the bin.

Assembly Might Take A While

The Lifetime 60058 takes a long time to assemble. Instructions are enclosed in the box and are generally easy to follow, but for someone who is not very handy with tools it can be a daunting task. Holes need to be pre-drilled, some parts may need to be tapped into place, and some steps of assembly require two people. It’s not that any of the steps are overly hard, but it can just be labor intensive. The up side is that it really does feel solid, and well made after its finally together.

Some tips we discovered for better use

The hardware (hinges, latches) are heavy duty quality but are not made of stainless steel. You may want coat the hardware with a rust inhibitor or paint to prolong their life out in the elements. Finally, this compost tumbler’s large capacity will require a moderate amount of effort to turn when it is full. That’s to be expected with a composter that has such a high capcity. It’s still much less work than turning a traditional compost pile, but it’s something to keep in mind, depending on you’re physical abitlity. Just don’t add too much material if you think you might struggle to turn tumbler.

THE GOOD

  • High capacity
  • Heavy-duty construction
  • Internal mixing bar provides good aeration for compost
  • Rotation locking pin allows for easy loading/unloading in the horizontal position
  • Fully removable lid

THE BAD

  • Long assembly process requires some proficiency with tools
  • Hardware (hinges, latches) may rust if left untreated
  • Can be hard to turn, for some, when the bin is full

THE BOTTOM LINE

Once you get past the long and sometimes frustrating assembly of the Lifetime 60058 Compost Tumbler, you end up with a heavy-duty, efficient, and mostly easy to use composter. It’s high capacity design is great for those looking to compost large amounts of material quicker than traditional compost heaps.
